It's a known feature of the game that there are graphical glitches if you Alt-Tab out of the game while playing, or if you let the game load while minimized to the tray.
Once you have that version of sims.exe set up, start the game FROM that sims.exe, not from the disc. The version of the sims.exe that you download from this page has the DRM disabled, so THAT version of the exe doesn't get shut down by Windows when you try to run it. (The Sims 1 comes with DRM that won't run in Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. After you have installed the final expansion pack, get the version of the sims.exe that works with modern operating systems from this page and follow the directions for replacing the sims.exe and setting the compatibility. (When they say "House Date," they mean "HOT Date.") If you don't remember the correct order, this page at The Sims Depot will tell you the correct order, depending on whether your base game is regular, deluxe, double deluxe, or mega deluxe. Make sure you install expansion packs in the correct order. Install the game and all of your expansion packs.
